The Colorado Public Utilities Commission is seeking comments on a proposal from Xcel Energy to increase natural gas rates for its customers.
Wildfire Mitigation Plan
On June 27th, Xcel Energy filed a new Wildfire Mitigation Plan. This is the second plan filed by the Company and covers proposed spending for the 2025-2027 period totaling approximately $1.9 billion. The Plan includes new technology and programs including weather stations, cameras and drones, undergrounding electric lines, vegetation management, public safety power shut-offs, and stakeholder outreach.
Wildfire Power Shut-Offs
Over the weekend of April 6-7, Colorado experienced wind gusts of up to 100 mph in some areas of the state and sustained high winds throughout the weekend. Over 200,000 people were without power statewide - 55,000 the result of an intentional, precautionary outage conducted by Xcel to reduce the possibility of wildfire. The PUC is investigating ways that the implementation of public safety power shut offs can be improved.
Gas Rate Plans
Gas rates are set by the Public Utilities Commission for its regulated utilities. A rate case includes opportunities for public input and participation. The PUC will decide how much a utility needs to charge its customers to cover cost-of-service.
